It was likely the unassuming beauty of the landscape that long ago gave the inhabitants of this rugged Dutch region a greater appreciation for the precious and extraordinary. Trusting in the catches of tireless fishermen, they established important trade cities back in the 16th century, and in 1643, a Dutchman proudly christened an island at the other end of the world after his home: New Zealand.
