A small bag with a great history | For centuries, it was an essential part of any distinguished lady's vanity set, first small and inconspicuous to conceal her powder, perfume flacon, and sometimes even smelling salts. As time went on, it became a more and more ostentatious part of cosmopolitan femininity – and always matched the dress. The pompadour, named for the somewhat less than chaste 18th-century madame and the former Dutch company whose legacy we have the privilege of continuing, can be considered a veritable predecessor of the modern woman's handbag.
